Incoming law student?
Make this one small change to your LinkedIn headline—and you will immediately stand out.
Most profiles say:
“Incoming law student.”
That tells me almost nothing.
Now compare:
“Incoming law student interested in Labor & Employment law, ABC Law School.”
“Incoming law student — future patent lawyer — ABC Law School.”
Same person. Entirely different impact.
Why this works:
—Creates an instant conversation hook.
—Gives lawyers and recruiters a way to place you.
—Shows people how you’re thinking about your future—and invites them into that conversation.
In other words, you go from “easy to overlook” to “easy to reach out to.”
Your headline does not need to be perfect. It just needs to say something.
A simple formula:
Incoming law student + interest or direction + school
And if you are thinking:
“But I don’t know what I want to do yet.”
Good. You are not supposed to.
This is not a commitment. It is a starting point.
Try:
“Exploring corporate and securities law”
“Interested in public interest and civil rights”
“Curious about IP and emerging tech law”
You can revise it anytime. In fact, you should.
But saying nothing? That closes doors before they even open.
Give people a window into your thinking.
A window will open doors.
Saying nothing can do nothing.
