Big law breeds alcoholics, and I was one of them.
Chardonnay.
You might think when I left Biglaw in 2016, the problem would have left me, too.
But it only got worse.
Suddenly, with 24 hours of unscheduled time available to me each day, filling it became all too easy.
Dear 3L, This is a mental-health check-in. Everyone assumes it’s the 1Ls with the most stress. But my 3L almost killed me.
On the outside, I seemed to have it all together:
—a top GPA,
—a job lined up for fall, and
—a law review Note ready to publish.
What could I be stressed about?
As it turned out, a lot.
We ought to do a better job explaining what it means to “take ownership” as an associate.
By the time you’re a mid-level associate, you’ve put in some tough time—
You’ve endured the early years of 0% control over your schedule.
—You’ve canceled social plans;
—you’ve sacrificed umpteen weekends; and
How a Pre-law Student Should Start on LinkedIn—
It’s the winter before you start law school.
You’re excited but nervous.
You’re not really sure what to expect.
You want to be prepared.
You want to do the best you can.
I have enjoyed writing to you here on LinkedIn over these past 3+ years now. I thought you might want to know a little bit about who’s been writing to you.
So here goes. ⤵️
I’m fifty-five, female, and married to Matt for twenty-six years (he’s a lawyer, too). We live in a suburb of Philadelphia and have three daughters in their 20s, including one who is a 3L now.
I grew up in a suburb of NYC. My father was a lawyer and my mother, an English teacher. (Yes, I know; go figure.)
In a breakout session at a networking conference I attended, the speaker asked,
“How many of you have gotten a job because of a connection?”
There must have been at least 100 lawyers in the room.
Every single one raised their hand.
👉 Law students: This is the way to get jobs.
Dear 2L, They call it a “2L Slump” for a reason.
They didn’t give you much of a break, did they? Since right after exams, you’ve had the write-on, your first “legal” job, early recruiting, OCI, and whatever you’ve had going on in your personal life.
Whether you have a 2L summer job lined up or not, it probably hasn’t felt like much of a summer “break.”
So I got my first 1-star review on Amazon yesterday.
I knew it would happen eventually, but wow, it still sucked.
Last evening, as I played the otherwise terrible day back in my mind, the review was the thing that really stuck in my craw.
Then a real friend came through for me.
And I emphasize “real.”
Dear 2L, As you approach interviews with lawyers, learn these common lawyer titles:
IN-HOUSE COUNSEL:
This term refers to attorneys who are employed at an entity (such as a company or organization) that is not “in the business” of providing attorney or other legal services. In-house counsel typically serve one and only one client: the same entity that employs them.
This is for law students who want to network on LinkedIn. It answers the question you asked,
What’s the difference between a connection and a follower?
🔹 When you “connect” with someone, it’s a 2-way relationship:
—You will show up in their network count (connections + followers)
—They will show up in yours
Dear 2L, Here are 10 best practices for your upcoming job interviews.
👉 Included is my favorite best pre-interview tip: Treat interviews like you did your recent oral argument.
—Get ready with 2-4 stories or past events that showcase your best attributes, just like you prepared 2-4 legal points to make about your case.
Dear 2L, If the job search isn’t going well through OCI so far, please don’t despair, but do be ready to pivot before it’s too late.
Here’s a recap of what’s happening plus some new thoughts for you.

Things started out rough when BigLaw pulled the rug out.
🔸 Several prestigious firms:
I’m thrilled to report:
A most unexpected eventuality:
My book’s just hit #1 in the “Law” category!
Now, I’m not so naive.
Nothing’s guaranteed,
The rank is just for one day.
I’m up against a big corporation today.
My book came out on Amazon, but I’m panicked that no one will focus on it,
—> which will cause Amazon to bury it in their search results.
I’m just me here.
—I have no publisher or big team,
—I fear that I’m running out of steam.
But I REALLY believe the book will help so many new law students.
♥️♥️ 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝟏𝐋 — the BOOK — is live on Amazon!!! ♥️♥️
