My Top 8 Legal-Writing Accounts for You to Follow

These are my top 8 legal-writing accounts for you to follow, along with some reasons ‘why’ for each:

1: Chris Schandevel: Chris is my favorite legal-writing creator: he’s always bold and crystal clear about his opinions (even those I disagree with!). An appellate advocate based in Virginia, Chris litigates U.S. Supreme Court cases and posts tips from his famous “Brief Ninja” Style Guide, along with stories of his brief-writing tactics. Chris also is the best at giving back, as he regularly supports all the top accounts I list.

2: Patrick Hagen gives top-notch legal writing advice with a unique creative and enthusiastic flare. He is a BigLaw associate based in Florida who has firmly established himself as a regular go-to for legal writers on LinkedIn. In-house counsel may especially enjoy Patrick’s advice.

3: Nick Bullard is a former BigLaw partner who now works in-house, Nick continues to share his great legal writing tips on LinkedIn. He titles them, “Tiny Tips,” and they’re perfectly short and punchy for busy litigators.

4: Cherise Bacalski is a Utah-based appellate lawyer who recently founded her own law firm. She shares appellate writing tips based on what she sees in her practice in real time, and her posts always speak to both litigators and law students.

5: Ross Guberman —Follow Ross for advanced analysis and takeaways from the best, current appellate and judicial writers. You’ll also get the hottest takes on AI, news of Ross’s travels, and reports about BriefCatch’s success. Ross trains our federal judiciary and is the guru for anything and everything legal writing. You should also pick up Ross’s great book, “Point Made”; it should be a staple on every legal writer’s bookshelf.

6: Joe Regalia is both the head of the legal writing department at the University of Las Vegas Nevada as well as the head of a company called “write .law.” Joe has been at the forefront of analyzing AI’s impact on legal writing education. He also has a recent book, “Level Up Your Legal Writing,” and I am particularly fond of his email newsletter.

7: Ryan McCarl is a business litigator based in Los Angeles. He’s a founding partner at Rushing McCarl LLC and teaches as an adjunct at LMU Loyola Law School. Follow Ryan for takeaways from his 2024 book, “Elegant Legal Writing,” as well as copies of slides and handouts from the training sessions he presents at law schools and law firms.

8: Megan Wade is an appellate litigator based in Connecticut who recently started her own appellate law firm. I am just starting to follow Megan’s posts, and I am liking what I see!

So, I’ve got several more I might suggest, but this post is getting long, and I thought I’d leave filling out the list to you—

🗳️ Who would you add to my list and why?

Fondly,

💌 Amanda
