Dear 1L, There’s a right way and a wrong way to reach out to a lawyer for networking on LinkedIn.

Dear 1L, There’s a right way and a wrong way to reach out to a lawyer for networking on LinkedIn.

🛑 The WRONG WAY is to:

-Pick a random lawyer
-Learn nothing about them
-Send them a generic message
-Explain you want to “pick their brain”
-Make clear you seek a 1-time transaction
-Suggest that they “jump on” a 60-min Zoom

✅ The RIGHT WAY is to:

-Pick a particular lawyer
-Learn everything you can about them
-Send an individualized, tailored message
-Suggest a brief call by phone/method they choose
-Show you’re ready to invest with them for the long haul
-Ask them for nothing in return, but be open to learning more

👉 I’ve created a sample “DO” & “DON”T” script for you below.

Please let me know your questions!

Sending luck to all of you—

P.S. If you make one contact per week—the RIGHT way—then by the time On Campus Interviewing (“OCI”) starts, you should already have firms interested in you (and perhaps already an offer)!

P.P.S. When should you start networking the “right way”?

Well, you should have started yesterday.

So please don’t tarry long.

Why not start today?
