Personal Branding

Dear Followers,

This post is for those who follow me for a non- #Dear1L reason.
Maybe you follow me bc I write posts about legal writing.
Or bc I’m a LinkedIn-lawyer/“Content Creator.”
Or bc I contribute so many comments.
Whatever your reason, thank you.
In 2023, I’ll write more.
More for you.

To that end:

1️⃣ I’m starting a 2nd hashtag for my legal-writing content.

I’ve gone back and forth on what to call it, but lest perfection prevail over progress, the choice is made, and #DearLegalWriter it will be.

My pledge for 2023 is to try to write at least one legal-writing post per week.

Here’s No. 1:

Try replacing “is not required to” with “need not.”

❌ “D is not required to disprove P’s claims.”

✅ “D need not disprove P’s claims.”

—This edit is a current favorite of mine. Do you use “need not”?

2️⃣ I also want to start writing about being a Content Creator on this platform & sharing what I’ve learned in my first 16 months.

No “Dear” or new hashtag for this endeavor (though I’ll try to attach an existing hashtag—maybe #contentmarketing or #entrepreneurship—to these posts).

I hope that my writing will help inspire more of you to become active writers on LinkedIn, too.

3️⃣ Finally, #Dear1L, will continue with more new content.

We’re 1,860 followers strong today—1,859 more than we started with when I announced the hashtag’s creation a year ago (Dec 29, 2021).

Through my Dear 1L letters, I aim to create a more positive law-school & legal job-search experience for all our future lawyers.

Do you use a personal hashtag?

I have little clue what (if any) actual value attaches to a hashtag, nor do I particularly care.

For me, it’s about building and feeling a sense of community around common interests.

***

That’s it for today.

Wishing each one of you a very happy New Year. Here’s to a winning 2023 all around—

💌 Amanda
