Signed Copy of My ‘Dear 1L’ Book Free Offer
Three days ago, I announced a FREE offer.
The results were unexpected—both good and bad.
Here’s a recap:
🔹 The OFFER (for those who missed)
As you may recall, my offer was to mail a signed copy of my ‘Dear 1L’ book to 3 incoming law students. I shared both on LinkedIn and in 2 Facebook (FB) groups: 1/ “Parents of Law Students est. Sept. 2021,” which I founded and for which I am sole admin.; and 2/ “Ladies in Law,” (formerly “Girls in Law”), which is based abroad and in which I have no admin role, but where I have posted my tips for law students over the past few years.
I hoped to find 3 interested students.
The results were good and bad.
🔹 The GOOD
On the positive side, I received THIRTY-SIX responses to my offer. 36!
—Each message was warm, thankful, and heartfelt, and many students wrote personal notes of multiple paragraphs.
Further melting me was that 3L, Amanda Freeman, offered to match my gift by purchasing an additional 3 books to cover any interested students that I couldn’t.
🔹 The BAD
I was able to deduce (based on the specific statements of interest), that the majority of the 36 came from students who had seen my post in the “Ladies in Law” group.
Here’s why that’s bad:
The “Ladies in Law” group rules prohibit “self-promotion.”
Well, as you may have guessed, this morning, I awoke to see that the Ladies in Law group has indeed BANNED me.
(Full disclosure: I had been warned about 6 months ago when I first published and shared a link to it on Amazon. I didn’t think a free offer with no link would be against group policy, but so be it.)
Moving on . . .
🔹 Here is WHAT I’M DOING AS A RESULT
I am buying another box of books to give away!
—This will supplement the partial box I have remaining at home, and it means that between Amanda F. and me:
⭐️ We will be sending books to at least TWENTY new 1Ls.
I will be contacting each of the 36 names individually to share the results.
⬇️
And finally:
To meet the growing interest, I will start creating more content focused on students BEFORE law school starts.
I will share it here and in my parents group, and I will also add to the weekly letters I send to current 1Ls by email.

P.S. Thank you to everyone for your ideas on what I should do next. I am planning for a legal-writing prep course for next summer and also an audiobook. I’ll report on my progress as it begins in 2025. 🙏🏻
