“Don’t bore us. Get to the chorus.”

Dear 1L,

I just heard this memorable motto by Motown Records founder, Berry Gordy Jr., and I want you to say it over and again when getting ready for your oral argument.

If you can say only ONE thing to the panel, what will it be?

Don’t get caught stammering.

Have ONE refrain on the tip of your tongue.

Make it simple.
Make it memorable.
Make it the one point that wins your case.

That’s your chorus.

Learn it. Love it. And, most importantly:

👉 Get to it!

Fondly,
💌 Amanda

P.S. Gordy was the famous founder of Motown Records who urged his artists to get to the hook of the song—the part we all know, love, and know how to sing along to. That’s where the money was.

Under Gordy’s leadership in the 1960s, Motown soared to success with smash hits by the Supremes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, and many, many more.
