Dear Legal Writer:

Before you give that draft brief to a partner for review, check to see if you’ve used any of these WORDY ways to say “because”:

📍 In light of the fact that
📍 Due to the fact that
📍 As a result of
📍 For the reason that
📍 On account of the fact that
📍 On the grounds that

All these ways take a roundabout route to get to your point.

They’re also clunky to read, and they add to your word count.

To be sure, there’s a time and place for each of them.

But in legal writing, “because” is almost always better.

Might you swap out some wordy clauses from your writing today?

Fondly,
💌 Amanda
