Dear 1L,

Here are 3 more things I learned in 2022 by way of LinkedIn:

🔹 1: “Tsundoku” is a Japanese term for the practice of acquiring many books & “shelving” them, unread.

—While I work on limiting my book-buying habit, I’m comforted to know both that there’s a name for it & that I’m not the only one prone to it!

🔹 2: Don’t fall victim to “the sunk cost fallacy.”

The “sunk cost fallacy” describes the tendency to continue investing time, effort, or resources toward a goal, even when the utility of doing so becomes irrational. The tendency stems from not wanting all that investment to go to waste.

—This fallacy seems to have potential applicability to almost any situation. I’m using it currently to help curb procrastination. It’s so easy to say, “well, I’ve already lost half a day, why bother starting to work now?”

—Next time you catch yourself thinking that, remember the sunk cost fallacy and try to snap yourself back to rational action.

🔹 3: Make 2 people proud every day: your 8-year-old self, and your 80-year-old self.

That way, you allow your carefree, creative instincts to flow freely, contained only by your older, wiser instincts.

—I am having SO much fun with this one! (I especially like the 8-year-old part.)

—When you’re working diligently on something that’s taxing cerebrally, try to make time each day for some fun, carefree, 8-year-old nonsense. (Blasting music, dancing & singing out loud is a sure-fire tonic!)

What new thoughts have visited you b/c of LinkedIn in 2022?

P.P.S. In Part 1 of this post, I talked about: (1) “building on rented land”; (2) “context switching”; and (3) “Will it make the boat go faster?” (To learn more about, see link to this post in the comments.)
