Dear 1L,

I bet you never thought law school would mean new worries over where you put your commas.

But it does.

And I’m not just talking about Bluebook cites. I’m talking about your prose.

Here’s the deal: Lawyers need to use 2 commas when other writers don’t.

Just learn them now: the Oxford Comma & the TICTAC Comma.

N.B. Some writers only add an Oxford or TICTAC comma if a particular sentence would be unclear without the comma.

—The problem with that approach is it requires you to stop, think, and wonder to yourself each time:

❓ Is a comma needed for clarity in this particular sentence ❓

That’s a lot of stopping, thinking, and wondering.
Legal writing takes long enough. Don’t make your job harder.

Just start using these 2 commas all the time, and you’ll never have to stop, think, or wonder again.

🗳️ What’s your comma practice?

Fondly,

💌 Amanda
