The Best Thing I Did for My Book?
The best thing I did for my book?
Beta-readers.
👉 A beta-reader is like a test case.
—The idea is that you send a very early draft of your book to people who resemble the types of readers you’re targeting.
—Then, you get all their feedback; you make the draft better; and you send it to a new set of beta-readers.
The way I look at it, you can never really have too many beta-readers.
(You have to evaluate how many you can manage!)
By the end, I had 7.
Some were more involved than others, but each contributed something invaluable.
In fact, “Dear 1L” would not be what it is today without them.

So please join me in thanking these amazing future lawyers!
(I can guarantee they know a thing or two about legal writing 😉, and they’re all amazing to work with; I endorse with my highest recommendation for future employment.)
Gregory Parker (Duquesne Law) Gregory Parker
Juliana Torres (UCLA) Julia Torres
Diliana Gresbrink (BU) Diliana Gresbrink
Teresa Levesque (Notre Dame Law) Teresa Levesque
Dylan Brower (Utah Law) Dylan Brower
Ted Gomes (UPenn Law) Ted Gomes

I cannot thank each of you enough, and I am SO excited to see all the places you go!!

P.S. Despite no publisher or marketing team, we’ve made some great progress. But there is so much work to do! Please support Dear 1L’s efforts to nurture our next generation of legal writers by spreading the word about the book. The reviews are unanimous: it’s a must-read for 1Ls!
