The Biggest Legal Writing Changes Since the 1990s
Legal writing has changed since the 1990s when I started.
Here’s my run down of the big changes I see:
🔹 1990’s:
-Use complex words nobody knows.
-Use no charts, timelines, or photographs.
-Use boldface & italics, for emphasis.
-Stick to Times New Roman font.
-Use acronyms for party names.
-Use footnotes to save space.
-Maximize use of legalese.
🔹 Today:
-Use simple words a 10 y.o. knows.
-Use ample charts, timelines & photographs.
-Use punctuation & placement for emphasis.
-Use Century Schoolbook or similar font.
-Spell party names—acronyms are out.
-Use true double space to save space.
-Minimize use of legalese.
Are you on the 2025 bandwagon?
Well, come on up. Jump on.
Start becoming a better legal writer.
You might as well start today!
