10 Interview Tips for Law Students

Dear 2L,

Here are 10 best practices for your upcoming job interviews.

👉 Included is my favorite best pre-interview tip: Treat interviews like you did your recent oral argument.

—Get ready with 2-4 stories or past events that showcase your best attributes, just like you prepared 2-4 legal points to make about your case.

—Figure out a way to weave the stories/events into the interview—regardless of specific questions asked—just like you had starting points prepared for oral argument.

The more you can control the topics of conversation and run the interview on your terms, the better you will do.

For the majority of the attached, you must thank JOHN HESSION.

John generously shared his thoughts on interviewing and related topics yesterday, during an early-morning, 2-hour power session with a group of BOSTON COLLEGE LAW SCHOOL students that he mentors.

John is a retired law-firm partner who took kindly to me during my 1991-93 paralegal days, and the two of us recently reconnected around our shared desire to help more law students at our alma mater.

John became an interviewing expert during multiple decades of hiring-partner experience at top law firms in Boston.

The attached is an annotated and edited summary of the thoughts John shared yesterday, combined with my own thoughts incorporated throughout.

P.S.  I am wishing you SO MUCH positivity and success in the crazy OCI process this summer. đź’•đź’•

Please know that everyone else is feeling uneasy about their futures, too.

It’s just a really tough time all around.

Keep the good cheer, and please do let me know how everything turns out.

I will always be thinking about you over here.
