History Behind Dear 1L

Three years ago, I started writing to 1Ls on LinkedIn.

It was Sept 2021–

very much still in the pandemic.

My initial posts were titled, “1L TIP TODAY,” and while they did not do too well, they started me on a weekly posting schedule.

Gradually, more and more 1Ls caught on.

🔹 In Dec 2021, I wrote my first post in letter form.

My views soared.

I listened.

I began starting writing in letter form, and in Jan 2022, I created #Dear1L.

—> 1Ls started saying my tips were so helpful, students were printing out for their bulletin boards.

That helped to rally awareness + enthusiasm, and I was encouraged to keep writing.

🔹 In January 2023, I branched out beyond Dear 1L.

I created a second series for both lawyers and law students:

“Dear Legal Writer.”

And I created #DearLegalWriter.

—> 1Ls continued to tell me they were collecting my tips, and some were organizing them into a binder. 2Ls and 3Ls started to benefit from the tips, too.

—> And many lawyers took note, asking me, “When are you writing a book on legal writing?”

🔹 The third year, I decided to take tip collection into my own hands.

I gathered approximately 200 of my original letters and tips, edited them, added to them, and selected the best subset.

I then massaged them into a narrative that tracks the 12 mos of 1L.

I then indexed the tips into a 5-page table of contents designed to serve as a roadmap for you, and I created a book to hold them.

-to sitting for final doctrinal exams,

-through the spring brief, and

concluding with preparation of resumes for post-1L job interviews.

✴️ You’ll also get ALL MY BEST ADVANCED-LEGAL-WRITING TIPS,

the very same ones that lawyers are reading and applying in their real-world jobs today.

The book concludes with a 👉 30-point, global, self-editing checklist 👈

that can be used for ANY form of writing a law student or lawyer might need to complete.
