1L TIP TODAY: Outlining

“Outlining” just means:
(A) rewriting (or retyping) your daily class notes so you can read and understand them;
(B) writing down all your reading notes and highlights (that you took before class); and
(C) “marrying” your class and reading notes.

[If you had one class, part of a second class, and 2 sets of readings on “offers,” for example, you would be combining all of those notes, so the end product is not organized “by class,” but “by topic.”]

The goal is this: when you sit down to study for an exam, you aren’t working from notes that you can’t read or understand (because so much time has passed since the class for those notes), and you don’t have to flip through pages in bulky books.

Essentially, you want all of the content on each topic to be in one place, in your words, and by your hand.

Doing this facilitates the process by which you learn to understand the content, memorize it, and then start to practice applying it to new hypothetical fact patterns.

You will gradually whittle down your outline into something shorter and more manageable to use before the exam.
