Dear 1L,

It can be hard to get started posting on LinkedIn.

What should your tone be with so many potential, diverse readers?

Try this:

Have ONE specific person in mind you’re writing to and write your post as if you are speaking ONLY to them.

I always go back to Warren Buffett’s annual shareholders’ letters.

They were so good in part because he’d address the letters to his sisters, Doris and Bertie, while he was drafting. (He’d remove the reference right before sending it out.)

Doing this enabled him to accomplish 2 goals:

🔹 1: It made each reader feel as if he was writing to them personally.

🔹 2: It kept the vocabulary and method of explanation simple enough that a non-expert could follow.

Since starting on LinkedIn, writing my posts the “Warren Buffett way” has been the single biggest thing that’s helped me get over my posting anxiety.

Try it and let me know if it helps you!

Fondly,

💌 Amanda

P.S. Typically, I write about legal writing and share tips for law students. But I also love to help new lawyers get started on LinkedIn.

I have so many wisdoms that have been passed down to me to share. DM me! I’d love to meet and support you.
