8 Questions to ask before any Legal Writing Project

Dear Legal Writer: As a junior associate, you’ll be asked to complete a lot of written projects, and you’ll want to show that you take ownership of your work.

One way to do that is by being proactive about gathering all relevant background information BEFORE you start.

Here are the types of proactive questions I recommend you ask:

-How long should it be?

-What format should I use?

-How much time should I spend?

-Do you have a particular writing style I should emulate, or any writing-style pet peeves I should avoid?

-Can you recommend a model for me to use?

-What is your intended use for what I submit? (e.g., a client memo, a larger brief)

-What will be the next project for this client and can I help?

I could never remember everything I needed to ask, so I found it helpful to have a checklist I could refer to. Save this for future reference, or make your own list!

🗳️ What questions would you add?
