10 THINGS I LEARNED IN 2022 B/C OF LINKEDIN

These are 10 things I learned about in 2022 via LinkedIn (Part 1):

1️⃣ Be careful when “building on rented land.”

If you build up a following on a social media platform, remember that you don’t own it. Everything could be stripped from you in the blink of an eye. Even if you did nothing wrong.

Takeaways for me:
—Diversify.
—Remember to download all your LinkedIn data regularly!

2️⃣ If you want to be more productive, avoid “context switching.”

Essentially, don’t get distracted when you’re trying to accomplish something important that involves deep thinking, because you lose a disproportionate amount of time when transitioning from one task to another.

If you’re trying to write a book, for example, don’t allow yourself to “dip in” to your inbox or “take a peek” at your LinkedIn notifications. The total time lost far outsizes the actual time spent (studies show, I think).

Takeaways for me:
—Write & work offline.
—Don’t check email, DMs, or other sites throughout the day. Instead, set aside time blocks for those tasks, and try to stick to them. Alternatively, set time blocks for the deep work, and don’t let any other tasks interfere there.

3️⃣ “Will it make the boat go faster?”

This mantra comes from the 1998 British Men’s Olympic Rowing Team. In the face of failures & setbacks, the team captain developed the saying to focus members on a singular goal: making their boat go faster.

If ever a question arose on whether one should take some action, they’d do it if—and only if—they could answer that YES, it would make the boat go faster. Long story short, to the world’s shock, they won the gold.

Takeaways for me:
—With the right mindset, you can accomplish even the most seemingly-impossible feats.
—If you want to accomplish something really difficult, make it your singular goal. Base all other decisions about activities you might pursue on whether they would further that goal.

I’m still working on writing up 4-10. I welcome any and all new ideas to add to my growing list!

What new ideas have you learned more about b/c of LinkedIn in 2022?
